And the children of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim, and Ashtaroth, and the gods of Syria, and the gods of Zidon, and the gods of Moab, and the gods of the children of Ammon, and the gods of the Philistines, and forsook the LORD, and served not him. In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes. Go and cry unto the gods which ye have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your tribulation. And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water. And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel; and he judged Israel ten years.
And a certain woman cast a piece of a millstone upon Abimelech’s head, and all to brake his skull. And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there. Then the Philistines went up, and pitched in Judah, and spread themselves in Lehi. And when he had made an end to offer the present, he sent away the people that bare the present. And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Suffer me that I may feel the pillars whereupon the house standeth, that I may lean upon them. So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire. And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and served Baalim: And they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the people that were round about them, and bowed themselves unto them, and provoked the LORD to anger. And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groanings by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them.
In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes. And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day.
