And there was a young man out of Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there. Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Bethel to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah. So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying, Praise ye the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves. And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it. And the man went into the land of the Hittites, and built a city, and called the name thereof Luz: which is the name thereof unto this day. And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me. Yet ye have forsaken me, and served other gods: wherefore I will deliver you no more.
But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host: And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host. And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them. And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company? And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee? And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household. And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.) And they answered, We will willingly give them. And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey. Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green withs which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. And God hearkened to the voice of Manoah; and the angel of God came again unto the woman as she sat in the field: but Manoah her husband was not with her. And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.
